Labor Leader - December/January

It is the holiday season, a traditional time for celebrations and spending time with family and friends. But for many local families this year, the holidays will be a time of worry and struggle.

The 2009 AFL-CIO National Convention played host to a celebration of Labor’s political successes from the last election and the planning of the future for America’s working families under new national leadership in both the Labor Movement and the White House.

Drilling dozens of holes into the ceilings of strangers might sound like an odd way to spend one’s Saturday. But for seven members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 465, it was a day well spent.

The Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice of San Diego County celebrated the Labor Movement at its Annual Voices for Justice Benefit Breakfast on Nov. 19.

The Labor Council is proud to make Esther Sanchez the Legislative Hero for November and December for her work on the Oceanside City Council and to congratulate her on her new position as a California Coastal Commissioner.

The major funding for the EFS Program officially ended November 18. The Department of Labor Participation received an unprecedented number of phone calls for assistance this year due to the turbulent economic climate that has existed for the past 18 months. Although the news of a recovery continues to be somewhat bleak, we were granted an extension to continue the programs through November 18. Programs extended included rent, mortgage, water and electric bill assistance.
