State Assemblywoman Mary Salas has been named the November Legislative Hero of the Month for standing up to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger during this summer’s budget crisis.
Although the budget before the Legislature eliminated overtime pay for approximately 250,000 workers in the high-tech industry, enough legislators caved to pressure to approve it.
Assemblywoman Salas put the people of California first and did not vote for a flawed budget solely because it would be passed.
Besides sneaking through the take away of overtime pay without any
discussion, concerns that the budget did not address the state’s
economic problems have unfortunately been realized.
Gov. Schwarzenegger has again asked Californians to make drastic financial cuts due to a $28 billion budget gap.
The Labor Council wishes that Assemblywoman Salas’ colleagues heeded her advice and corrected the flaws of the budget that was ultimately passed.
The 120,000 members of the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council thank Assemblywoman Mary Salas for standing beside working families in fighting against the Governor’s demand for a budget that takes away important worker protections and does not address the state’s long-term financial health.
